MTV has finally dipped its toe into music discovery with a new app for the iPhone.
The app allows users to search for a song by artist name, song lyric or over-the-air song recognition.
On the upside, the app is more robust than most of the other music discovery apps already on the market. Once the song is identified, the app displays the expected link for purchase in iTunes, along with artist and title. But it also includes live video, photos and a feature that mash-up the artist's top ten songs into a 90-second clip. There's also bio information, MTV exclusive content and some solid graphics.
If the app has a flaw, it's that it doesn't do as well with obscure artists. But for anything close to mainstream music, this new app is likely to become your go-to app for music discovery.
