Warner Bros. Discovery To Shutter, Consolidate Its TV Everywhere Apps

The great TV Everywhere app extinction continues.

Earlier this year, Paramount shut down its TV Everywhere apps for mobile and tablets, including those for Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon and Nick Jr.

On September 23, Disney closed all its TV Everywhere apps, including DisneyNOW, Freeform, FXNOW, ABC, and National Geographic, although TV Everywhere access is still available via the browser.

And now the various Warner Bros. Discovery-owned linear networks are shutting some of their TV Everywhere apps and consolidating the content under a few larger brands.

Beginning on November 13th, the TV Everywhere apps for Destination America will shut down and at least some of the content will be moved to the HGTV app. The Cooking Channel app will shut down and content will shift to the Food Network app. The AHC app will shut down and content will shift to the Discovery Go app. Discovery Life will shutter with its content moving to the TLC app.

The move isn't a big surprise and not just because of the similar moves that were made by Paramount and Disney. A revamp of the apps several years ago made them all essentially the same app. You can access content from any of the WBD-owned apps from inside any of them, which makes most of the apps superfluous. Also, given that most of the content is also available on the subscription-based Discovery+ app, it makes sense to push viewers in that direction.

Besides the Food Network, Discovery, TLC and the HGTV apps, ones for OWN, Science, Animal Planet, Investigation Discovery and Travel are also scheduled to stay active at least for now.
