Apple TV+ has long been the lone major SVOD to refrain from licensing non-original films for its streaming service.
That approach has changed - at least slightly - with an announcement on Friday the service will temporarily add a collection of 50+ licensed movies to its US version of the service. Some titles will be available through March 31st, others will be around until April 30th.
There's no official word from Apple TV+ why they are experimenting with this "Great Movies Collection," which is comprised primarily of movies that have rotated regularly through a number of other streaming services. And in fact, some of the films are still available on rival streamers.
My assumption would be that this is a low-cost, low-risk way for Apple TV+ executives to see if there is a desire among subscribers to watch licensed films.
Here is the list of licensed films now available as part of this package on Apple TV+ and when the films will leave the streaming service.
