Here's everything you need to know about the world of television for Friday, July 26th, 2024:

NEWS FROM THE SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON
This is the first year since the pandemic where it feels as if things are a bit back to "normal." More panels from the studios, some over-hyped Marvel stuff and just a lot of energy. And, as is generally the case, a lot of announcements and here is a rundown of the television and streaming related news:

* The holiday-themed event special LEGO Masters: Celebrity Holiday Bricktacular, will air this holiday season on FOX. The four episode two-night event series will feature special celebrity guests include Sophia Bush (One Tree Hill, Chicago P.D.), Holly Robinson Peete (Queens Court, Meet the Peetes), Eric McCormack (Will & Grace, The Other Black Girl) and Lil Rel Howery (Get OutHarold and the Purple Crayon). They'll be paired up with fan-favorite former contestants – Christine Blandino (Season 3), Stephen Joo (Season 3), Aaron Newman (Season 1) and Corey D. Samuels (Season 1) – to compete in holiday-themed challenges for charities of their choice.

* Disney Branded Television and BBC jointly announced The War Between The Land And The Sea, an all-new Doctor Who spinoff. Leading the five-part series is Russell Tovey (Feud, American Horror Story: NYC) and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Surface, Loki), alongside returning Doctor Who cast members Jemma Redgrave (as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart) and Alexander Devrient (as Colonel Ibrahim).

* Prime Video announced the casting of Kento Kaku as Akira Nishikiyama, aka Nishiki, during the Like a Dragon: Yakuza panel. The panel for the action-packed TV adaptation of SEGA's iconic video game series started with the official teaser trailer giving fans a glimpse of the first ever footage from the show. The first three episodes will premiere on Thursday, October 24th.

* During the Gremlins: The Wild Bunch panel, Max made some casting announcements for the second season of the animated prequel series, including news that Simu Liu will join the main cast, and John Glover – star of the “Gremlins” film sequel – will return to the franchise as a guest voice. The new season will premiere Thursday, October 3rd. Also announced on today’s panel, Michael Paul Chan – another Amblin film alum who played Data’s father in “The Goonies” – will also make a guest appearance this season alongside an all-star guest voice cast featuring Ronny Chieng, Keith David, Will Forte, Kelly Hu and Jimmy O. Yang.

* During the Friday panel for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, it was announced that AMC was renewing the show for a third season and the show will be shifting its location to Spain. Production on the new episodes will start next month and will be based in Madrid, with additional shooting planned in the Galicia, Aragon, Catalonia and Valencia regions.

* Hulu has ordered a sixth season of the animated series Solar Opposites. The news came during a panel on Friday and comes ahead of the show's season five premiere on August 12th. Season five will have a binge release but there will also be a special Halloween-themed episode that will premiere closer to that holiday.

The “Jim Lee & Friends” panel included an exclusive first look at the upcoming Max Original adult animated series Creature Commandos, debuting this December on Max. Creature Commandos is a seven-episode series that a secret team of incarcerated monsters recruited for missions deemed too dangerous for humans.

* Prime Video has ordered new seasons of Invincible, Hazbin Hotel and Sausage Party: Foodtopia. This will bring a fourth season of Invincible, seasons three and four of Hazbin Hotel and season two Foodtopia.

* Adult Swim’s adaptation of Junji Ito’s supernational horror manga “Uzumaki” will premiere Saturday, September 28th at 12:30am during the network’s action/anime block Toonami, with new episodes airing weekly in Japanese with English subtitles. Both the Japanese and English dub will be available to stream the next day on Max.

* Showtime announced the new series, Dexter: Resurrection, with Michael C. Hall returning to the lead role as Dexter Morgan. Hall will also narrate the inner voice of a young Dexter (played by Patrick Gibson) in the previously announced prequel series Dexter: Original Sin, which takes place in the ’90s. Dexter: Original Sin is set to premiere in December 2024, with Dexter: Resurrection launching in the summer of 2025.

* MGM+ announced that From will return for its third season on September 22nd, with Robert Joy (CSI: NY) and Samantha Brown (Y: The Last Man) joining the ensemble cast. Joy will play Henry, a curmudgeon to whom the years have not been kind, while Brown will play Acosta, a new-to-the-force police officer who is in over her head.

ODDS AND SODS
* Hulu has canceled the dramedy Life & Beth, created by and starring Amy Schumer, after two seasons. The second season of the show debuted in February.

* Charles Barkley told Dan Patrick this morning that, despite previously saying he would retire after the 2024-2025 season, he has had discussions with Amazon, ESPN and NBC about a possible job covering the NBA. Barkley also said that his last contract included language that allowed him to leave TNT Sports if it didn't retain the NBA broadcasts. Patrick suggested the Inside gang simply take their entire staff and move to a new network.

“Well, first of all, you would have to ask Ernie (Johnson) that,” Barkley responded. “Because Ernie would probably never leave Turner. He also said he has not spoken to the show’s other two analysts, Kenny Smith and Shaquille O’Neal, either.

* Max has canceled the animated series Clone High after two seasons.

* Prime Video has decided not to pick up American Rust for a third season. The streamer had picked up Jeff Daniels and Maura Tierney series after Showtime had canceled it after its first season.
