Here's everything you need to know about the world of television for Friday, April 19th, 2024:
IS TUBI CONSIDERING SOME SORT OF SOCIAL FEATURES?
Today I was reading the updated Tubi Terms of Service (I know, I'm a wild man) and while I don't have a copy of the previous version, I don't recall there being so many mentions of what the company refers to as "social features:"
If you want to use certain features of or participate in certain Activities, including Social Features on the Tubi Services you will need to create an account (“Account”)......
The Tubi Services may include opportunities for you to upload, post, transmit, make available or otherwise distribute (“Post” or “Posting”) text, images, audio, video or other content, including Messages (as defined below) and any content that incorporates sound recordings from your personal music library, background noise, and ambient noise (“User Content”) via the Tubi Services....
You further hereby grant us a royalty-free license to use your name or user name, image, voice, and likeness to identify you as the source of any of your User Content. Your ability to provide an image, voice, and likeness may be subject to limitations due to age restrictions imposed by applicable law wherein you reside or are accessing the Tubi Services....
You agree that Tubi may give you attribution for your User Content, but we are not required to do so. To the extent permitted by applicable law, you hereby waive and agree not to assert any “moral rights” or other proprietary rights in any User Content against us, our Affiliates, our licensees, our representatives, or other users. The rights you grant to us in this Section 5 include, but are not limited to the right to reproduce sound recordings (and make mechanical reproductions of the musical works embodied in such sound recordings), and publicly perform and communicate to the public sound recordings (and the musical works embodied therein), all on a royalty-free basis.
You acknowledge that any User Content you elect to Post is done so voluntarily and you have no expectation of privacy or confidentiality with respect to any User Content you Post, and that no fiduciary relationship exists between us and you or any other party based on the User Content.
The Tubi Services may offer users the ability to send messages and post comments, including any replies to messages and comments (collectively “Messages” or “Messaging”), and repost, react to, share, bookmark, or otherwise interact with other users, their Messages, and User Content (collectively, “Social Features”). Messages and Social Features may be open to the public generally, to all users of the Tubi Services, registered users of the Tubi Services, or to a select group of users of the Tubi Services. Tubi reserves the right, but disclaims any obligation or responsibility, to limit your ability to send Messages or use any Social Features, and to restrict or remove your Messages or Social Features, or refuse to include your User Content on the Tubi Services for any reason at any time, in Tubi’s sole discretion, and without notice to you.
Some of this sounds a bit like the boilerplate disclaimers I've seen on other services. But a lot of this seems very specific, especially the discussion of a user's ability to send messages and post comments.
I've written before about my belief that social sharing and interaction is the next frontier for content discovery. I wonder what Tubi has in mind.

* CBS has renewed the Dick Wolf-produced drama FBI for three seasons. Current showrunner Rick Eid will step down at the end of the season. Weirdly, he also the showrunner for NBC's Law & Order.
* On the other hand, the network announced that both So Help Me Todd and CSI: Vegas will be ending after the current season.
* WGA members at Sesame Workshop have reached a new tentative agreement. Writers won historic jurisdiction and minimum rates for animation and new media programs, protections against AI, paid parental leave benefits, and substantial improvements to new media residuals.
* John Malone, chairman of Liberty Media Corporation, announced on Friday that he is stepping down from his director emeritus role at Charter Communications.
* The CW has opted not to renew affiliations with E.W. Scripps-owned stations in seven markets. Affected markets include Detroit, Miami, Tucson, AZ; Corpus Christi, TX; San Luis Obispo, CA; Norfolk, VA; and Lafayette, LA.
