Discovery+ Orders Children Of God Documentary

25 January, 2021

Discovery+ has ordered a five-part documentary that explores the story of Davide Berg and the 1970s cult Children Of God.

According to the service, Children Of The Cult (working title) will investigate the story of the Californian-originated organization through the accounts of three British women who escaped its clutches, and the unfolding criminal investigation aiming to bring to justice some of its key members.

Founded in the late 1960s by traveling preacher and self-described prophet David Berg, the Children of God began as a Christian community preaching a message of tolerance and love. In 1971, it set up its headquarters in London and rapidly expanded it reach to 130 countries. But with its growth came numerous allegations of child trafficking, sexual abuse and extreme psychological manipulation.

This documentary series tells the story of three women who were born into the cult but managed to escape and are now attempting to bring it down by telling their story.

Each episode uses testimony from the women, other victims and the detectives alongside previously unseen footage to chart the global investigation that ultimately brought some of the perpetrators to justice.

The series is produced by Mentorn Media, and is executive produced by Bernie Kay, head of factual at Mentorn, with Alicia Kerr serving as series editor and Hugh Ballantyne, series director.

"We are proud to be telling this extraordinary story with unique access and powerful unheard voices at its heart," said Kay in a statement announcing the deal.

Clare Laycock, senior vice-president, head of lifestyle and entertainment brands at Discovery added: "Mentorn has done a stellar job weaving together interviews and archival content to create a dramatic-narrative style documentary series that will absolutely resonate with our Discovery+ subscribers."
