Hulu Orders Gael Garcia Bernal And Diego Luna Series 'La Maquina'

Hulu has set a straight-to-series order on “La Máquina”, with showrunner Marco Ramirez (“Daredevil”) at the helm. Gabriel Ripstein (600 Miles, “An Unknown Enemy”) will direct, with Gerardo Gatica, Leandro Halperin and Adam Fishbach onboard as producers.  “La Máquina” will star Gael García Bernal (Y tu mamá también, Coco) and Diego Luna (Y tu mamá también, Rogue One: A Star Wars StoryPan Y CircoAndor)who will also produce under their La Corriente del Golfo banner. Searchlight Television is serving as the studio on the new Spanish-language limited series, which will stream on Disney’s DTC platforms as a Hulu Original in the U.S.

“La Máquina” follows an aging boxer (Gael García Bernal) whose crafty manager (Diego Luna) secures him one last shot at a title.  But to make it to fight night, they must navigate a mysterious underworld force.

Gael, Diego and Marco are world class storytellers and we look forward to bringing audiences their story and experiencing alongside them this last shot their characters get together,” said Craig Erwich, President, Hulu Originals and ABC Entertainment.

“It is a real honor to unite Gael and Diego onscreen again for “La Máquina”, their friendship and chemistry is a joy to experience,” said Searchlight Presidents Matthew Greenfield and David Greenbaum. “And we’re delighted to be working with Marco, whose unique voice and vision allows us to explore this world in a wholly original way.”

Ramirez is a writer and producer best known for his work on Daredevil”, “Orange Is the New Black”, and his play The Royale. He is currently penning the script for Paramount Pictures’ upcoming Untitled Transformers Project.

Ripstein, who will be directing all episodes for the limited series, is a multi-award winning writer, director and producer. He currently serves as writer, executive producer and director on the political thriller and drama series “An Unknown Enemy” for Amazon Studios. His directorial debut 600 Miles garnered numerous awards, and he was also nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Feature for Michel Franco’s Chronic.

Bernal recently starred in M. Night Shyamalan’s Old. Other film credits include Alfonso Cuarón’s Y tu mamá TambiénThe Motorcycle Diaries, Wasp Network, Chicuarotes, Coco, Museo, Ema, The Kindergarten Teacher, and Amores perros, among many others. He starred in the Primetime Emmy Award winning “Mozart in the Jungle” for Amazon Studios, for which he earned a Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Comedy or Musical. He can currently be seen in HBO Max’s “Station Eleven”, based on Emily St. John Mandel’s acclaimed novel. Next up, Bernal will star in a Disney+ Halloween Special for Marvel and Amazon’s Cassandro, a film about “The Liberace of Lucha Libre”.

Luna will soon star in the Disney+ Star Wars series Andor and lend his voice to the Warner Bros. animated film DC League of Super Pets alongside Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart.  His feature films include Y tu mama tambien and Milk; and most recently Wander DarklyIf Beale Street Could Talk, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and The Book of Life.  His television credits include creating and directing the Netflix comedy series “Todo Va A Estar Bien”, serving as Executive Producer and star of his Emmy Award winning documentary series “Pan y Circo”, for Prime Video, starring in the first two seasons of Netflix’s “Narcos: Mexico”, and lending his voice to the Emmy Award winning DreamWorks animated series “Trollhunters” from Guillermo del Toro for Netflix.

Searchlight Television is the recently launched division of Searchlight Pictures, which develops and produces series for streaming, network, and cable partners.  Its first production, “The Dropout”, in conjunction with 20th Television, was nominated for six Emmy Awards.  The Hulu Original limited series stars Amanda Seyfried and follows the true story of Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos.  Searchlight Television is also producing the upcoming Hulu Original variety series “History of the World, Part II”, the much-anticipated follow up to the classic Mel Brooks comedy film in partnership with 20th Television.
