Netflix has greenlit its first Brazilian original series, 3%, which will debut in 2016.
The drama is a futuristic thriller set in a world divided into progress and devastation, where candidates seeking a better life must undergo a cruel selection process.
The series will be directed by Oscar nominee Cesar Charlone and shot in Ultra HD 4K. Boutique Filmes is producing, and it will star João Miguel (Estômago) and Bianca Comparato (Avenida Brasil).
"We look forward to working with such an acclaimed team for our first Netflix Original production entirely shot in Brazil," said Erik Barmack, the company’s VP of independent and local content. "We are confident that this fascinating premise will be widely enjoyed by our members internationally."
"Partnering with one of the most innovative networks in the world is very exciting," added executive Producer Tiago Mello. "Netflix’s willingness to invest in Brazilian content, local talent and creative storytelling is key for our growth as a industry. The story was originally created a few years ago and now I am thrilled that it will turn into a completely new original Netflix series."
