Sony To Sell PlayStation VUE Through Smaller Cable Providers

Sony Interactive Entertainment America and the National Cable Television Cooperative have entered into a deal that will allows NCTC’s members to offer the broadband-delivered PlayStation Vue service. The National Cable Television Cooperative is an organization of more than 800 small cable operators across the United States. Many of these companies are considering downsizing or eliminating their cable services completely and this deal might be a first step in outsourcing that part of their business so they can concentrate on the more lucrative broadband services.

“Our members are looking for ways to offer more video choice to their customers, and this new agreement allows them to do that,” NCTC president and CEO Rich Fickle said in a statement.

Playstation Vue has struggled to compete in an increasingly crowded "skinny cable" market. The service doesn't publicly discuss subscription numbers, but outside estimates place the subscriber numbers at less than 400,000. That number would be comparable to the subscriber numbers at DirecTV Now, but much less than industry leader Sling TV's estimated 2,000,000 subscribers.
