The Netflix series '13 Reasons Why' centers around a high school student who kills herself. She leaves tapes behind that explain the reasons (and people) she believes helped push her to make that decision. It's garnered a lot of attention from some health care professionals who worry about the show's impact on the emotional well-being of teens who watch the series.
The topic of the show and its potential impact on students is obviously a concern for some high schools, including my local middle school in Inver Grove Heights, MN.
Here is a copy of the email that was sent to all parents today:
Hello IGHMS families!
I am writing today to make you aware of a new Netflix series called “13 Reasons Why,” based on a fictional novel by Jay Asher. The series depicts the journey of a high school student who dies by suicide, leaving behind audiotapes detailing the events that she perceives led to her death. It is creating student conversations during our school day and wanted to make you aware. Attached is a letter we want you to read when you have time based upon a few things we have learned about this program. Please feel free to contact any of us on the letter if you have any questions.
Thank you for your time!
