The Television Critics Association Announces 2021 TCA Award Nominations

Today The Television Critics Association (TCA) announced the nominees for the organization’s 37th Annual TCA Awards. The 2021 TCA Awards showcase a diverse roster of TV content across a wide array of platforms and genres, spotlighting outstanding creators, series, and stars of the 2020-2021 TV season. More than 200 TCA members, professional television critics and journalists from the United States and Canada, nominate programming available on broadcast, cable and streaming outlets.

The TCA presents awards in 13 distinct categories, honoring outstanding achievements in drama, comedy, miniseries, youth, news and information, reality, and variety, sketch or talk shows, among others. Categories have been expanded this year to feature a total of eight nominees each, with the exception of “Outstanding Achievement In Variety, Talk Or Sketch,” which has nine. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the TCA will forego its formal in-person presentation once again. Winners will instead be announced at a later date.

This season’s tallies saw Netflix back in front, boasting a TCA Awards-best 15 nominations. Last year’s leader, HBO, is a close second with 14 nominations; with its counterpart, HBO Max, rounding out the top three with 10 total nominations. Streaming platforms again proved to be a force, with Apple TV+ racking up eight nominations, followed by Disney+ which tied with Showtime’s five nominations. Additionally, Hulu and NBC garnered four apiece; Amazon, CBS, FX, PBS Kids, and Peacock each has three; and Starz earned two. Bravo, Comedy Central, Disney Jr., MSNBC, NatGeo, Paramount+, and PBS close out the nominations with one each.

This year’s nominations roster is dominated by an unprecedented number of first-year programs. Five of Apple TV+’s eight nominations come courtesy of the acclaimed freshman breakout comedy “Ted Lasso,” which leads all nominees. The sitcom’s tally includes nods for Individual Achievement In Comedy for stars Jason Sudeikis and Hannah Waddingham, as well as nominations for Outstanding New Program, Outstanding Achievement In Comedy, and Program Of The Year.

The TCA’s coveted Program Of The Year category is, itself, a testament to the strength of the incoming class, headlined by an intriguing matchup that pits HBO’s “I May Destroy You” and “Mare of Easttown” against the HBO Max dramedy “Hacks.” Tied with four nominations apiece — the second-most among this year’s nominees — the three series also vie for Outstanding New Program. Program Of The Year also features Netflix’s captivating period piece “Bridgerton,” Amazon’s powerful limited event “The Underground Railroad,” Disney’s genre-bending hit “WandaVision,” Netflix’s stunning coming-of-age drama “The Queen’s Gambit,” and the aforementioned “Ted Lasso.”

Elsewhere, headline-grabbing profiles “Framing Britney Spears” and “Oprah With Meghan And Harry: A CBS Primetime Special” contend for the honor of Outstanding Achievement In News And Information. “I May Destroy You” creator, writer, and star Michaela Coel enters a loaded Individual Achievement In Drama landscape that includes Oscar®-winner Kate Winslet, Marvel Cinematic Universe standout Elizabeth Olsen, and Thuso Mbedu in her international debut. Trevor Noah, John Oliver, and Stephen Colbert battle for late-night supremacy in Outstanding Achievement In Variety, Talk Or Sketch. Veterans “The Handmaid’s Tale,” “Pose” and “The Crown” go toe-to-toe with heralded newcomers “Lovecraft Country” and “P-Valley” in Outstanding Achievement In Drama. And genre pioneer “The Real World Homecoming: New York” seeks to reclaim its throne in Outstanding Achievement In Reality.

Cinedigm Partners With Elvis Presley Enterprises To Launch The Elvis Presley Channel

Elvis has re-entered the building through a new streaming deal with Cinedigm (NASDAQ:CIDM), in partnership with Elvis Presley Enterprises. Cinedigm, the leading independent streaming company that serves enthusiastic fan bases, announced today the upcoming launch of an exclusive ad-supported (AVOD) and linear streaming service, The Elvis Presley Channel. The Elvis Presley Channel will be comprised of Elvis Presley archival content and specials, as well as musical content from some of the most influential rock ‘n roll artists that inspired the music industry.

Expected to launch early 2022, Cinedigm is planning to make The Elvis Presley Channel available in the United States and Canada for linear and AVOD platforms on connected TVs, digital set-top boxes, media-streaming devices and the web. Cinedigm plans to distribute the programming across the broader OTT landscape to its vast network of leading distribution partners in the streaming space including Samsung, Pluto, Roku, Hulu, Amazon, Tubi and many more.

“There are few individuals more iconic than Elvis Presley, he transcends time, genre and medium,” said Erick Opeka, President of Cinedigm Digital Networks. “The opportunity to build a branded channel around Elvis opens up streaming possibilities to an entirely new demographic in the fastest-growing segment of the ad-supported business. Cinedigm plans to feature continual Elvis programming with exclusive specials and documentaries including Singer Presents…Elvis (the ’68 Comeback Special), Elvis Aloha from Hawaii Via Satellite and Elvis by the Presleys on The Elvis Presley Channel. Additionally, Cinedigm is planning to tap into the archives of legends such as Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison and more. Many of music’s most iconic locations will be on display, with specials highlighting impact cities like Memphis that helped shape rock ‘n’ roll, as well as general music documentaries. The new channel will provide viewers an intimate view into the artist that defined a generation with exclusive films, specials, and documentaries. The Elvis Presley Channel will also give fans a chance to watch rare home footage from the Graceland Archives.

The deal was negotiated by Josh Thomashow, Executive Director of Acquisitions at Cinedigm, and Andrew O. Miller on behalf of Authentic Brands Group (ABG).

Deluxe & CineSend Partner For Electronic Delivery Of Content To Cinemas In Canada

Deluxe, a global provider of solutions to the world’s leading content production studios and distributors, has announced a strategic partnership with CineSend, an innovative media technology company, for electronic delivery of content to cinemas in Canada. The partnership joins CineSend’s existing network with Deluxe’s electronic delivery platform to create a single fulfilment solution.
 
CineSend currently operates the leading e-delivery network to cinemas in Canada. “CineSend is a natural partner for Deluxe, whose goal is to offer a compelling solution for studios and distributors with global scale. It’s a great decision to collaborate and leverage the power of a single technology platform across North America,” said George Eyles, Deluxe EVP and GM of Worldwide Cinema. “We are excited to unlock instant scale in the Canadian market that will immediately benefit our exhibitor and distributor partners.”
 
Deluxe will be installing its proven Gofilex software onto CineSend’s CSX hardware, which is already widely deployed in cinemas across Canada. Eric Rosset, VP of Business Development at CineSend, welcomed the announcement stating, “We’re delighted to partner with Deluxe. Plugging our solution into a worldwide network makes perfect sense. Studio Ghibli Fest Returns In 2021

After launching in 2017, followed by two wildly successful iterations in 2018-19, STUDIO GHIBLI FEST is back in theaters for 2021, kicking off with celebratory 20th anniversary screenings of esteemed director Hayao Miyazaki’s Oscar-winning feature Spirited Away. GKIDS, the acclaimed producer and distributor of multiple Academy Award-nominated animated features, and Fathom Events are proud to continue their collaboration, and deliver four timeless classics from Academy Award-winning director Hayao Miyazaki and the legendary Studio Ghibli to U.S. cinemas throughout the fall with STUDIO GHIBLI FEST 2021.
 
On the heels of the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures opening, which will feature a special exhibit paying tribute to the artwork of Hayao Miyazaki, STUDIO GHIBLI FEST 2021 highlights four beloved films by the director, including the Academy Award-winning masterpiece Spirited Away, the Oscar- nominated fantasy epic Howl's Moving Castle, celebratory 35th anniversary screenings of the steampunk adventure Castle in the Sky, and concludes with the timeless fan-favorite My Neighbor Totoro.
 
“Since their founding, Studio Ghibli has always wanted fans to see their works on the big screen,” said GKIDS’ President David Jesteadt. “We are delighted to partner with Fathom Events to welcome Ghibli fans back to cinemas with four of the studio’s most enduring works, including a 20th anniversary celebration of Spirited Away, one the most influential and celebrated films of all time.”

Santa Barbara International Film Festival Will Return In Person In 2022

Santa Barbara, CA. SBIFF announced today that the 37th Santa Barbara International Film Festival presented by UGG® will be happening LIVE  March 2 - March 12, 2022. Official events including screenings, filmmaker Q&As, industry panels, and celebrity tributes, will be held throughout the city, including at the historic Arlington Theatre.

Last year, SBIFF executed an elaborate build-out of two beachside drive-in theatres, debuting 47 world premieres and 37 U.S. premieres, with honorary awards bestowed upon Bill Murray, Carey Mulligan, Sacha Baron Cohen, Amanda Seyfried, Riz Ahmed, Maria Bakalova, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Andra Day, Sidney Flanigan, Vanessa Kirby, Tahar Rahim, Zendaya, and Delroy Lindo. With the anticipation of the in-person live experience coming back to film festivals, organizers are expecting A-list guests to ascend on Santa Barbara once again, making it a must-stop location on the awards circuit, delivering an unpresented number of films, many of them World and US premieres. The film lineup and schedule will be announced in February 2022.

Discovery To Become Triathlon's New Home In Europe

The Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO) and Discovery have agreed a new partnership that will see the Collins Cup screened exclusively across Europe through Eurosport, Discovery’s leading multi-sport brand.

The Collins Cup is the PTO’s inaugural flagship event taking place on 28th August in Šamorín, near Bratislava, Slovakia and is a new race format modelled after the Ryder Cup, which will see teams of International, European and USA athletes pitted against one another and put on display the excitement, rivalry, drama and personalities of the sport of triathlon.

As part of the one-year deal, with an option to extend for a further two years, Eurosport will show the race action, live and on-demand, in 20 languages. Core coverage, including shoulder programming, will span across Eurosport 1 and 2, and via the Eurosport App and discovery+*, with a two-part documentary available to stream via discovery+. The entire Collins Cup broadcast of over 7 hours will air live on Eurosport 2 and simulcast live on the Eurosport App, with highlights aired on Eurosport 1 the following day. The Collins Cup has also secured highlights and live coverage via Eurosport across Asia Pacific with highlights distribution in India.

Significant shoulder programming, including two Collins Cup countdown shows, will be aired across the Eurosport App to preview the biggest stories and key battles ahead of the live event. Two days before the live racing takes place, viewers will be able to stream the Collins Cup draft show live from Šamorín where Team Captains will pick athletes for each individual match up.

discovery+ will also offer streaming access to PTO’s Beyond Human documentary produced by Noah Media Group, which follows the journeys of three of the biggest names in the sport – Lionel Sanders (Team Internationals), Sebastien Kienle (Team Europe) and Heather Jackson (Team USA) in their quest to see who rules triathlon.

Ovation TV’s Statement On Broadway Reopening

"We are pleased to see that steps are being made to reopen Broadway in September and that thousands of workers – actors, technical crews, ushers, box office staff, and others – will be able to return to their jobs after a difficult 18 months. The reopening of Broadway is a win for not only the arts, but also a critical accelerator to kick start the city’s economy. Broadway supports nearly 97,000 local workers and contributes about $14.8 billion every year to the New York City economy*. 

However, there are countless local theatre programs and arts organizations across the country that have not received the same support as Broadway, and many of them are still in danger of closing permanently, if they haven’t already. An investment in the arts at a federal level is needed to help the industry recover and thrive. We call on the Biden administration and Congress to enact a $1 billion annual appropriation for the NEA, with a minimum 5% increase each year to bring its budget more in line with the economic value of the industry, and to install a Secretary of Arts & Culture to guide the sector’s economic potential moving forward. The arts are the epicenter that also drive local hospitality and dining, retail, transportation, and more, in every single state and every single town. The arts also allow communities, in all their diversity, to express themselves and celebrate their rich interconnected histories and traditions. If the arts thrive, the country thrives."
